Jeremy Balfour, Scottish Conservative MSP for the Lothian region visited the Newbyres Care Village in Gorebridge to meet with residents of the care home and children from the nearby Newbyres Nursery, who take part in the intergenerational project there. Children from the nursery visit the care home on a weekly basis which provides a fresh energy and a fun experience for the residents. The after school club at the nursery and residents from the care home also take part in a pen-pal program. Intergenerational projects such as this one are becoming more popular and successful, and Newbyres Nursery has recently won an award from Generations Working Together.
The whole village has benefitted from this intergenerational project. The project provides a sense of purpose for both parties and is a great link to the wider community that care home residents may otherwise miss. Studies have also shown that intergenerational relationships can improve mental health and are an opportunity for both groups to learn new skills.
Jeremy commented saying:
“I am very pleased to congratulate Newbyres Nursery on their award, as they provide a great experience for the people involved and create links within the community. This is a fantastic way for children to improve their communication skills and older residents really look forward to and enjoy the visits.”
“It is wonderful to see the community spirit in the area and the project has multiple benefits for the people involved. I wish Newbyres Nursery and the Intergenerational Project every success in further ventures.”
