Last week the Edinburgh based charity, Scottish Love in Action, held an exhibition stand in parliament, raising awareness amongst MSPs of the work that they are doing in India.
Scottish Love in Action is a charity which seeks to alleviate poverty through partnering with grassroots Indian organisations that care for, educate and empower vulnerable children and young people.
The exhibition highlighted their Voice 4 Girls campaign, which is aimed at girls who are in education but at high risk of dropping out. They do so by running camps for young women over the summer holidays where they can have fun, be motivated, and learn about issue that affect them, such as career options; sexual health; and domestic abuse.
Lothian MSP, Jeremy Balfour, sponsored the exhibition and spoke of his support for the charity:
“Organisations like Scottish Love in Action play an incredibly important role in helping communities in India enable young people to escape poverty.
“The charity’s work around giving girls a voice is particularly important in tackling some of the inequalities and issues of gender-based violence that are sadly all too common in these communities.
“It is important as a parliament that we continue to be outward looking; helping other countries take steps towards greater equality within education.”
