On Friday Jeremy Balfour MSP visited Drylaw Police Station where he met with the community police officer.
Mr Balfour learnt of their strategy to prevent crimes by having officers out on the streets, getting to know the community.
Reports were recently released showing that there was a 1 percent increase in the number of crimes recorded in Scotland between 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Mr Balfour has said that the answer to this problem is for increased government funding for the police service so that they can have more officers out amongst the community.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP said:
“It was very encouraging to meet the officers at Drylaw Police Station and to hear about what they are doing to prevent crime in the area.
“Community police officers play a vital role in keeping our towns safe.
“Having police officers out on the streets results in the police being more in touch with what is happening in the community; it makes local people feel safer; and it prevents crimes from taking place.
“There has been an increase in crime across Scotland over the past year, to solve this the Scottish Government must provide better resourcing to the police service and prioritise a community approach.”
