Lothian MSP, Jeremy Balfour, marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by visiting the site of the concentration camp on Tuesday.
The 27th January marks 75 years since the prisoners of the biggest Nazi German concentration camp were set free.
Around 1.3 million prisoners were held in Auschwitz during the Second World War, over 1.1 million of them died in the camp.
Mr Balfour was invited to be part of the European Jewish Association delegation to Auschwitz for Members of Parliament and representatives from Ministries of Education from across the continent.
Commenting on the visit, the Conservative and Unionist MSP said:
“No matter how many times you hear accounts of visits to Auschwitz, nothing quite prepares you for how chilling an experience it is until you are there yourself.
“During the visit I became acutely aware of how important it is that we continue to discuss the events of World War II and educate future generations about it, because if we do not remember those horrendous events we risk history repeating itself.
“We all have a part to play in making sure that this never happens again; starting with ensuring that we show tolerance to those around us no matter their religion, race, gender or any other characteristic on which we differ.
“In particular, there is still a real need to address the anti-Semitism that continues to occur in the UK and across Europe.”
